1.1 History of Independence Day


British colonialism prevailed in India. They tortured and looted Indians all Over the nation. In 1857, the espy mutiny started in Meerut to mark India’s first fight towards independence. In the 20th century, all the freedom fighters under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi started the independence movement. Freedom was given to India on August 14, 1947.

The Constituent Assembly of India met for its fifth session at 11 pm on 14 August in the Constitution Hall in New Delhi. The assembly session was presided by then president Rajendra Prasad. Everyone gathered around 11pm the same day to celebrate the independence they had got. When India became a free country, their first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru addresses the nation, gave his famous speech quoting” Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.

At the strike of the hour, when the whole world slept, India woke up to the good news of its freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity” and hoisted the national flag at red fort, Delhi.

People across India celebrated this day to acknowledge the freedom they had got from the British colony that ruled India for more than 200 years. While the entire nation was celebrating the Independence Day, Gandhi was at Calcutta to stem the carnage. On 14 August 1947, the Independence Day of Pakistan, the new Dominion of Pakistan came into being; Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as its first Governor General in Karachi.

North east India called for boycott of Independence Day by forming the Naga National Congress. In 1980, this protest went to its peak calling for organisations like the United Liberation Front of Assam, National Democratic Front of Bodoland to boycott and mar the celebrations of the Independence Day.

Jammu and Kashmir also boycotted the celebration of Independence Day. Separatists, protestors and organisations got together with bandh, strikes, use of black flags to boycott the celebrations of the Independence Day. Moist organisations also boycotted the whole event. In the anticipation of terrorist attacks, particularly from militants, security measures are intensified, especially in major cities such as Delhi and Mumbai and in troubled states such as Jammu and Kashmir. The airspace around the Red Fort doesn’t allow flights to pass through to prevent aerial attack and additional police forces are deployed in other cities.

On Independence Day Indians pay homage to their freedom fighters and the leaders who helped them get independence. The time during Independence Day is celebrated with so much galore and enthusiasm. Every government building is decorated with tricolour lights with strings of festivities hung all over the building.

A big celebration event is organized by the government of India at the Raj path, India Gate in New Delhi, the national capital, where people of all religion, culture and tradition gather to listen the patriotic speech of our Prime Minister. By celebrating this day is mainly to remember and respect all the great leaders and freedom fighters.

This day honours who had sacrificed their lives and loved ones in making India an Independent country. The president addresses the nation with his speech, while the prime minister will host the national flag and give a speech to address the nation at the Red fort in Old Delhi.

Ceremonies of flag hoisting will be done all over the nation. After that the salute is given by firing 21 guns and tricolour flower showering is held on the flag with helicopter. The tricolour of our Flag represents saffron for courage and sacrifice, white for peace and truth and green for faith and chivalry.

Special programs by the army, navy and Air Force will be held. Cultural programs will be held in schools, colleges all over the nation. Media will cover all the important events and does live broadcast. Patriotic songs will be played all over the radio. Everyone spends time with their family and friends on this Memorable Day.

Public life on this day goes uninterrupted. Since this is a national government holiday, all the schools, colleges, business centres, offices are all shut down to respect this day. All the government offices and banks remain closed on this day. A few shopping complexes and malls have reduced working hours.

The state transport functions normally to commute people to various celebration held across all the cities in India. Heavy traffic and high security will be present in this day due to flag hoisting ceremony held in the city.
