ओणम को राजा महाबली की याद मे मनाया जाता हैं। केरल पर राज करने वाले राजा महाबली बहुत ही उदार थे। राजा महाबली उदार ,धर्म परायण, सत्यवादी थे। उनके राज्य मैं धन और समृद्धि अपार मात्रा मे थी। 

उनकी लोकप्रियता बहुत बढ़ती जा रही थी। क्योंकि वह प्रजा के लिए राजा नहीं बल्कि भगवान बन चुके थे। लोग उन्हें भगवान की तरह पुजते थे। देवताओ से यह बात सही नहीं गई। इंद्र ने षड्यंत्र बनाकर विष्णु जी से सहायता मांगी। 

विष्णु जी ने वामन का रूप धारण करके महाबली से वचन लिया और उनको तीन पग जमीन देने के लिए कहा। महाबली की याद में ओणम मनाया जाता हैं।

उन क्षेत्रों का मालिक होना चाहता था। महाबली उनकी इच्छा मान गए। अचानक वामन विशाल हो गया। केवल दो कदमों के साथ, उसने पृथ्वी और स्वर्ग दोनों का दावा किया। उसके लिए और कोई जमीन नहीं बची थी, 

महाबली ने अपने वादे की रक्षा के लिए कुछ बलिदान किया। महान राजा ने भूमि के टुकड़े के लिए अपना सिर अर्पित कर दिया। हालांकि उनकी एक शर्त थी। 

वह अपने घर लौटने की कामना करता था और हर साल एक बार अपने लोगों द्वारा उसका स्वागत किया जाता था।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि महाबली अंडरवर्ल्ड (पाताल) पर राज करते हैं। हर साल, वह अपनी प्रजा के पास जाते हैं और उन्हें आशीर्वाद देते हैं। 

दस दिनों के उत्सव का अर्थ है कि दोनों लोकों के बीच आगे-पीछे यात्रा करने में लगने वाला समय। इसलिए, बहुत सम्मानित राजा का स्वागत करने के लिए ओणम को बहुत सारे उत्सवों के साथ मनाया जाता है।

ओणम का त्योहार मनाने का तरीका

सभी लोग अपने घर को दुल्हन की तरह से सजाते हैं और अपने राजा का इंतजार करते हैं और चारों तरफ दीप जलाए जाते हैं। ओणम का त्योहार 10 दिन तक मनाया जाता हैं।

5.पांचवा दिन अनिजहम होता हैं इस दिन नौका दौड कराई जाती हैं।

6.छठा दिन थिकेत होता हैं इस दिन से छुट्टी प्रारंभ हो जाती हैं।

7.सातवाँ दिन मूलम होता इस दिन मंदिरों में विशेष पूजा होती हैं।

8.आठवां दिन पूरादम होता है इस दिन महाबली और वामन की मूर्ति घर में स्थापित की जाती हैं।

9.नौवां दिन उठोदम होता हैं इस दिन महाबली केरल के प्रवेश करते हैं।

10.दसवां दिन थिरूवोनम होता हैं इस दिन ओणम मनाया जाता हैं।

The mythology of King Mahabali, who reigned over Mahabalipurum in ancient times, is related to the Onam festival. According to legend, King Mahabali adored his followers.

Mahabalipurum's inhabitants were very happy and rich. The King was revered and worshipped by them as a deity of heaven. 

The gods of heaven were envious of the King because of the praise and admiration he received. They devised a strategy to overthrow King Mahabali.

They sent Vamin, a young Brahmin lad, to the King as Vishnu. Vamin arrived in the king's presence and asked for a plot of land that could be reached with his three little steps. He needed the land for meditation purposes.

In response to his plea for such a modest parcel of land, the monarch was quick to give it. Vamin emerged in his full hues as soon as the monarch gave his approval, covering the whole expanse of the earth and heaven in only two steps. No room remained for the third stage.

In order for the third step to be taken on it, King Mahabali bowed his head. The monarch had no more room to live, neither on earth nor in heaven. He was nonetheless allowed to live in the underworld.

Mahabali asked Lord Vishnu to grant him permission to go to his kingdom once a year in order to see his people after receiving permission to reside in the underworld. Vishnu complied with the King's request.

The Onam festival is held in remembrance of the day when the King visits his people. The four-day Onam celebration is ongoing. Young Keralan maidens take a bath, dress elegantly, and then go out to gather flowers on these days.

They create Rangoli for the King's welcome using beautiful flowers. The Lord Vishnu and King Mahabali sculptures have been erected. 

In addition to burning incense and offering prayers, lamps are lit. Rangoli is submerged in a river or the sea on the last day of Onam.
