Engineer's Day Images 2022: Quotes, Wishes and Messages

Engineer, statesman, and scholar Sir M Visvesvaraya, also referred to as Sir MV, was the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.

Every year on September 15, Engineer's Day is observed in honour of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Visvesvaraya, known as the "builder of India," was born in 1860 to a struggling Telugu family in the little town of Muddenahalli, not far from modern-day Bengaluru.

There are several little-known facts about Visvesvaraya, who was given the prefix "sir" to his name after being knighted in 1955 as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contributions to the common good.

In fact, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and other countries honour him by observing September 15 as Engineer's Day. He is highly regarded as India's foremost engineer.

He received recognition for designing the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore (Mysuru), and he was a key figure in developing the flood protection system in Hyderabad.

Visvesvaraya's dad passed away when he was 12 years old. In Chikballapur, he completed his primary schooling. Then Sir MV travelled to Bangalore to finish his high school schooling.

He pursued engineering at the college of Engineering in Pune in 1881 after earning a bachelor's degree in arts from the Central College in Bangalore, which was associated with Madras University.

He joined the Mumbai Public Works Department (PWD) as an assistant engineer after receiving his degree in 1884. In 1895, he planned and built the water system for the Municipality of Sikur.

He is credited with creating the Block System, which would stop the water in dams from flowing wastefully, allowing the automated doors to close in the event of an overflow.

Sir MV was renowned for his promptness, complex concepts, and dedication. He also did much to advance the Kannada language.

Five months short of his 102nd birthday, on April 14, 1962, India's engineering genius passed away.

These fascinating facts about the pioneer are listed below.

1. Sir MV always valued statistics and emphasised facts and data. He said in his 1920 book Reconstructing India that there were 19,410 post offices in India at the time.

He allegedly placed focus on facts alone and was unimpressed by oratory talents.

2. Sir MV, a staunch proponent of meritocracy who wished to create schools for members of underprivileged castes, was asked to resign from his position as the Dewan of Mysore in 1918.

3. Sir MV had the strange practise of lighting two candles at home, one for personal use and the other for official purpose.

4. Sir Visvesvaraya and Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister, frequently engaged in productive and healthy arguments. According to the engineer, the Center was violating federal rights.

Nehru, however, gave the capital more authority while giving the states little encouragement toward true autonomy. Sir MV would frequently write letters to the prime minister of the day.

5. Sir MV was never bothered by death-related ideas. When asked the secret of his longevity as he was approaching his 100th birthday, he is claimed to have replied, "Death called on me long ago but found me not at home and walked away."

6. According to reports, Sir MV had a bank balance of Rs 36,000 in his final days after paying his staff, which included gardeners and his personal cook, with cash. He was adamant that his family should be self-sufficient.

7. Once, a friend wrote to Sir Visvesvaraya seeking for a place to stay for a few days. By paying 250 rupees for a month's rent, Visvesvaraya arranged for his acquaintance to reside at the official guest home.

Engineers from the Waterman Group and Alinea Consulting share their professional journeys in honour of the ninth annual International Women in Engineering Day.

The Women's Engineering Society (WES) developed the event to encourage more young women to pursue careers as scientists, engineers, and leaders. This year's theme emphasises the relationship between engineering and combating climate change.

It aims to increase awareness of the smartest and bravest female engineers who dare to contribute to the solution and work to create a better future.

In honour of INWED22, the Waterman Group chatted with many of its own female engineers on the job site at the Warwick Court renovation in Paternoster Square, London, where they provided an inspiring perspective on their professions.

Gender disparities in engineering understanding and interest were investigated in a 2018 report titled "Gender Disparity in Engineering." Girls are less likely to seek career guidance on engineering and how to become an engineer, the study showed, in addition to having less knowledge of these subjects.

Compared to 72% of guys their age, only 60% of girls think they could become engineers if they wanted to. In the 16 to 19 age group, only 25% of girls say they would ever pursue a career in engineering, and this figure reduces to 53%.

According to Engineering UK's March 2022 report, women make up 16.5% of all engineers, up from the 10.5% reported in 2010. Although there is still more effort to be made in this area, this indicates a 6 percentage point gain in the proportion of women working in engineering.
